Fall sports & bike rodeo

We are half-way through the fall sports season. This year John is playing soccer and Amelia is playing volleyball. Each kid has a practice and a game once a week, so our calendar is full of soccer and volleyball all the time. Luckily Amelia and John are both enjoying their respective sports, and Scott and I agree that these team sports are good outlets for the kids' energy!

Watching John's soccer games is more interesting now. Compared to two years ago when the three year-olds ran like scattered cats in every direction on the field, the boys are now more skillful and determined in their play. The boys don't play positions yet, but they have learned how to drive the ball down the field, redirect the ball when it is going the wrong way, and when it is appropriate to kick the ball out of bounds intentionally. This is the first year that girls can play volleyball so many of them are learning how to play for the first time. Serving is the most important skill, as most of the girls do not have enough experience to bump the ball after a serve to get it back over the net. In all of the games I have watched so far, a successful serve over the net always guarantees a point for the serving team. The elementary school held the annual bike rodeo this past Friday. Students begin participating in the obstacle course when they are first graders (kindergarteners can watch), and Amelia did well in her turn on the course.Hanging out on the playground after the bike ride with the class.
