Amelia and John's elementary school was closed last Monday for a school holiday. Your fist thought might have been that the school was closed in commemoration of Columbus Day. But no, school was out for the day not in honor of Columbus Day, but for FAIR DAY, of course! The Texas state fair is in full swing, which means that each public school district in the Dallas area closes for one day so that the children can attend the fair. I kid you not. Forget that guy who discovered America, but let's go to the fair!
Our family had plans other than the fair, however. The kids and I took advantage of the long weekend (which conveniently coincided with TCU's Fall Break) to travel to Florida for a visit with grandparents and cousins. We had a blast!
We flew in late Friday evening and were ready for fun Saturday morning. We met Laura, Jack and Henry at the bowling hour for a bowling match. Amelia and John have gone bowling a few times and are older so I expected them to enjoy it. But what really impressed me was how into the game Henry and Jack were.
Two year old Henry had no problems picking up the six-pound ball and carrying it over to the end of the lane when it was his turn.
Dad smoked us all with his many strikes and I am embarrassed that I was next to last. Both kids were proud that they earned higher scores than their mom, which made me happy. I was proud of Amelia and John for abandoning the sliver platform to guide the ball (in the photo of John above) half way through our game to learn how to throw the ball down the lane without assistance.
Later Saturday afternoon Laura invited us over to their neighborhood pool for swimming. Everyone swam except for me, as I self-selected to serve as the photographer. Amelia and John loved swimming with their cousins and grandparents! Jack and Henry are excellent, independent swimmers and finally Amelia and John have caught up to them in terms of being very comfortable in the water. Actually Amelia has been that way for awhile but John has caught up nicely this year.
Kudos to grandma for repeatedly jumping in with the boys!
We all met at the park on Sunday morning for more fun together. Laura brought balls and frisbees and we played soccer, hide and go seek, and other fun games. Little John engaged big John and grandpop in throwing the football for a long time.
Look at Henry and Amelia! Sweet.
