Chihuly exhibit

The Dallas Arboretum had been hosting an exhibit this summer featuring glass artwork by Dale Chihuly. I have been eager to take the kids to the arboretum to view the artwork all summer, but was less than eager to do so when we were dealing with 90-100+ degree temperatures during the warmest summer months. But last weekend a cool front rolled in (can't call it a cold front when it is still quite warm outside) and the temps over the weekend were expected to be closer to 90 than 100. And my parents were in town for a weekend visit. So combine the two and you have the perfect excuse to take a lazy Sunday trip to the arboretum!

What we found there knocked our socks off. The glass sculptures were simply amazing! Below are the kids with grandma and grandpop in front of the tallest glass sculpture.
You'll see many more photos of the glass artwork below, but these sculptures (made entirely out of glass) were incredible. Below is John pretending to hold the yellow sculpture in his hands. The kids were reminded of when I tried to do this with the Washington Monument in DC and suggested we do the same at the arboretum. I am so glad they at least took this memory of Washington back home with them!

The most beautiful flowers in the arboretum last Sunday were the hibiscus. Gorgeous! The flower beds were filled with somewhat overgrown planted flowers as we are at the end of summer.  The beds will be filled with mums and other fall plants in the next week or two for the start of fall as the Fall Festival begins next weekend.

John decided he wanted to get a close up. Here he is looking hesitant in front of the lily pad (glass artwork behind him in the pond to come below).
And this is just John being John, pure and simple. "Hey, mom, let me make a funny face for you!"
Look at these glass sculptures as lily pads on the pond.
This is the perfect picture shot! With the carnival and the float boat featured together on the still pond overlooking White Rock Lake. So pretty.

Dad and John are walking next to some tall purple reeds placed in the water, with another crazy sculpture placed in the middle.

We loved these "dancing" purple rods in front of a waterfall.

And last but not least, the Dallas Star. There is a Dallas skyline landmark with the shape of a sphere at the top that this sculpture is depicting. I liked the dramatic rise of this blue and white glass sculpture out of the flower beds.
We all enjoyed a super fun day at the arboretum with grandma and grandpop! Thanks for coming to visit us, and thanks for letting us use you as an excuse to visit the arboretum for the Chihuly exhibit!
