Scott and I lived in North Carolina for five years before moving to Texas. Every time we go back to the east coast we are reminded of how much beauty and lovely greenery there is in the Carolinas. So in order to take advantage of the beautiful scenery in the NC mountains, Scott and I went went on a hike in Mount Mitchell State Park last Sunday before Robin's wedding.
We drove for almost an hour along the Blue Ridge Parkway outside of Asheville to get to Mount Mitchell State Park. We selected a four mile round-trip hike, starting at the base of Mount Mitchell and rising to the summit. The trail was very rocky and tricky to navigate, so it took us about an hour to go up and another hour to come back down.
Once we reached the summit (total rise in elevation from where we parked to the top was about 500 feet maybe, though we went up and then back down on the windy trail much more than that) we were rewarded with these incredible views.
The weather was amazing, with temperatures in the 70s or low 80s, and as you can see there were just a few scattered clouds in the sky.
As the sign above depicts, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, 6684 feet above sea level.
Above you can see the road to the top, as there was an option to drive to the summit rather than walk. Our hiking trail was somewhere in the woods to the left of the road.
The rhododendron were blooming all over the park. We also spotted small flowers like the purple flowers below along the trail.
It was so refreshing to get out into the woods and enjoy a hike on this beautiful day! Many thanks to grandmommy and grandaddy (Scott's parents) for coming to stay with the kids in Texas while Scott and I traveled to NC alone. It was a real treat for us to enjoy adult time doing things like hiking and attending Robin and Skippy's wedding.
