John is 10!

From this cutie...(about 16 months old)

...to this spitfire...(in the Arizona desert, almost 4 years old)

...to the basketball loving 10 year old who resides in our household. Happy birthday to John!

John has been begging for a hoverboard since about October. John put it on his Christmas wish list early and planted subtle seeds in our brains about how he *must* have a hoverboard. Despite all the Christmas-time videos of hoverboards exploding around the world, John was pretty persistent in his desire for a hoverboard.

But Scott and I did not buy into John's plan. We felt that the risks were too high (flaming videos and all!), despite John's interest.

And then ALL the neighborhood boys got hoverboards for Christmas. Really, it was insane. John spent half the day after Christmas with our next door neighboors *loving* the boys' boards so much. And then the begging began.

Ever since December 26, most words out of John's mouth have included the word "hoverboard". John has sent Scott and I links to various websites that sell the boards, expounding on the differences between safe batteries and non-safe batteries, pros and cons with respect to cost, etc. John was relentless.

So for John's 10th birthday, Scott and I decided to gift John some cash $. It was a generous amount of $, but an amount that would only bring John partially to his "hoverboard" goal. Scott and I did the math on John's weekly allowance plus our estimate of his savings, and thought he might have enough cash accumulated by end of April to purchase the beloved hoverboard.

So Scott and I were blindsided when, moments after we presented John with his birthday cake and gift of $, that he returned from his room with a wallet full of cash to add to the $ in the birthday card. John counted out the birthday money from his family, and then started layering on multiple $20 bills, counting up to the hundreds! I exclaimed, "where did you get all that money?" And John replied, "I save it all, mom" (True.) " All of my birthday and Christmas money, plus my allowance is put in this wallet, so I have enough for the hoverboard".

And so he did. Next day the hoverboard was ordered from sharper image.com, and lo and behold John exclaimed with glee when the box arrived on our doorstep a few days later.

It took John about 2 1/2 seconds to rip open the box and pull the board out of the packaging before getting on to ride, He "tested" it in the living room and ever since the hoverboard has been confined to use outdoors. John is completely on cloud nine, and I am relatively proud of my boy for saving his money and pursuing his *dream* so relentlessly (even if I do not really understand the allure of the product). Note to all: we only allow the board to charge in the garage and only during waking hours (just in case the thing explodes!!).

We love you John!
