John's 7th Birthday

John celebrated his 7th birthday last week. Fun times! Hard to believe John is already seven years old, but that's just something I need to get over because he is getting older and really that is a great thing.

The "rule" (I use that term loosely) in the WIlson household is that the children can have an all-inclusive classmate/friends birthday party (20+ kids invited, huge affair, usually held at an outside location) until the age of 8, at which time they must switch to a more intimate small number of friends party. Amelia was on board with this easily, as she was excited about getting to spend more time with a smaller number of friends at her latest birthday parties.

This year would have been John's last year of a "big" party, and he completely surprised me by choosing to act early and have a smaller party this year. We talked about this several times during the month of January and I was pleased (and so was he) to just have a fun day with two of his closest friends. So after some deliberation, we decided that John could invite two of his close friends to go to watch the Harlem Globetrotters with him last Saturday. Scott took John and his two friends to the American Airlines Center last Saturday afternoon for a day of basketball. Below are Nate, Merritt, and John at the game.

Scott said that the boys really loved the game and were very excited about the games and activities that were put on by the production. After the game the boys came back to our house where they shot hoops and played basketball in the back for over an hour.
Around 5:30 that day I called them inside for pizza and cake. Well, not actually cake, but brownies and ice cream sundaes. More on that in a minute.

Cute candles, huh? Yes, that is what you get roped into when you take your 9.5 year old and almost 7 year old with you to Party City to shop for supplies - 6 different candles for the brownies!

So John requested Amelia's delicious brownies for his birthday treat this year. I loved the fact that John paid such a nice compliment to his sister by telling her that her treats were his favorite, plus we didn't have to go through the motions of getting a birthday cake from a local grocery store (as much fun as all of that gooey icing is...).

The boys enjoyed their brownies with whipped cream and sprinkles. Lots of sugar fun on top of a super fun birthday celebration day. Happy Birthday, John! We love you so much!
